General Observations

Transitional Zone: 3600’/E-Aspect/Few clouds/Calm/25F-32F. The sun was pumping heat throughout the day. Isothermal snow at lower elevations on solar aspects that gradually firmed up around 1500′. Near ridgeline found areas of denser wind effect snow and eventually drier surface deposits above 2500′. Dug a pit at 2700′ with a total snow depth of 120cm. Found the new snow interface down 30cm. An extended column test produced a non-propogating test result of ECTN19 down 30cm. There were two temperature crusts down 35-40cm and 10cm of 3-5mm rounding depth hoar at the base. Surface conditions had some variability where it was either softer due to the sun, or more refrozen due to the shade.

Natural slide activity observed:

  • At 10 mile looking south observed a D2.5+ at 3400′ NW aspect with wide propagation
  • North end of the Takshanuk Range D2 at 5000′ NW aspect looked like wind slab
  • North end of the Takhin Ridge D2 at 4200′ N aspect slab below a cornice feature
  • Takhin Ridge above north end of Chilkat Lake D3 at 4200′ NW aspect cornice/propagating slab
  • East aspect north of Old Faithful D2+ 4600′ E aspect wet loose on steep terrain
