General Observations

Lutak Zone: 1600’/N-Aspect/Clear/Calm/15F. Deep bear instabilities. This problem is at and below the surface. You can trigger these unexpected encounters by traveling through den habitat and anywhere in the Alaskan wilderness. Brown bears in our area prefer dens on steep slopes at moderate elevation 1350-3800′, but averaging 2500′, in smooth well drained topography that promotes vegetation and deep snow. Slope ranges from 5-60 degrees with mean slopes 35 degrees (backcountry ski terrain!).

Travel advice includes:

  1. During a perceived threat attack, consider playing dead. Try to protect neck and head.
  2. Be prepared to handle an emergency situation with a two-way communication device, first aid, extra layers, hand warmers, hot water, fire starter, emergency blanket, pad, bivy sack, and bright colored fabric to signal a USCG helicopter.
  3. Carry bear-spray throughout the season, especially in the case of wildlife surprises and scene safety.
  4. Practice and plan out how you would handle an emergency situation with your trusted travel companions, this will help you remain calm, not panic and make good decisions in a high stress environment.
