General Observations
Lutak Zone: 2500’/NW-Aspect/Overcast/Calm/Light Snow/10F. A couple inches of new snow capped the low density powder from yesterday. Underneath were a range of brittle crusts near the surface with a mostly hard supportable layer underneath. Between 1500′-2000′ on NW-aspect was a uniquely weak crust/facet combo down 6″ that probably had to do with pooling of warm air lower in the valley. A good reminder for how valley and glacier affect creates micro-climates. Measured a total snow depth over my probe length of 320cm, guessing close to 400cm at the top out! Wind slab beneath new snow near tree-line. Continued to be patient with assessments and conservative terrain selection while the overall snowpack is undergoing rapid changes.
