General Observations

Recent natural avalanche viewed from town on NW aspect across the Lynn Canal. Bottom line: Destructive potential, enough to bury, injure or kill a person/break a few trees and relative to the path the slide covers a small portion of a big path. Slab was likely recent storm snow over a persistent weak layer bed surface. We had ~7″ of snow over the last 48-hours. Ripinsky weather station wind direction last 48-hours NE-E-SE-S.

  • Depth of the crown estimate ~1-2′ at the deepest
  • Crown measured using Google Earth at ~1000′ wide
  • Length of path run ~500-1200′ vertical,  stopped at bench
  • Starting zone NW slope, loaded with an E-SE wind
  • Slope angle average on Google Earth was 38 degrees
