General Observations

Once again, we found fun and playful snow conditions in the Devils Thumb Trees over the weekend.

Even with our recent lack of new snow, the howling winds, and the warm temps, the trees are still holding on to the soft and fun powder. The trail up the first step is in decent shape (head in from the parking lot and follow the trail that goes to the RIGHT). AGAIN, be aware that a trapper is using the area and has snares directly on the trail.

Once you reach the first bench, the world is your oyster. We stuck below treeline and were able to get a bunch of laps through wonderful open woodlands. A thin (0.5cm), extremely breakable crust at the surface was no issue. Found about 70cm of snow on average. Obviously it would be even better with more snow, but given how windblown and thin most other places are right now, the trees are where it’s at!

No whumphing or cracking below treeline, but wind was actively moving snow around at all elevations Sunday and Monday.
