General Observations
Transitional Zone. Chilkat lake. Snowpit from an opening below treeline. Went looking for buried Surface hoar, and I found it easily. The “thin grey line” indicates a layer of buried surface hoar that formed a week or two ago. This will be a dangerous weak layer anywhere it is preserved. (think clearings in the trees, and wind-protected alpine bowls/slopes) Also of note: depth hoar near the ground which had only moderate strength. Watch out in steep areas that have a thin snowpack! Also be careful to avoid anywhere buried surface hoar may be lurking!
