General Observations
Toured from Eaglecrest parking lot up Mt. Troy on 3/15/19. Temps just at/below freezing – rain on the drive up and snow at the parking lot. Overcast sky, light and variable wind, and slight snow, approximately 1 cm/hour. Followed traditional skin route to safety meadows, then approached summit. Dug a pit approximately 2700 ft. Snow from last three storms and before all seemed well bonded – no failure on a compression test, and no failure or propagation on an extended column test. Near the summit, wind increased and visibility dropped. We observed significant cornices near the summit/ridgeline on the west aspects of Troy, at which point we transitioned and descended. Awesome skiing.
