A strong winter storm is currently impacting our area. Â Valdez received 12″ of snow with .85 inches of snow water equivalent as of 11/8 at 8 am. Â This new snow has fallen upon a thin,”weak” snowpack. Â Additional snowfall accumulations along with rising temperatures will create hazardous avalanche conditions in the mountains on 11/9.
As the current storm departs winds are forecasted to switch from Southeast to North, and quickly ramp up, with speeds of 60 mph anticipated. Â Strong winds will transport the new snow onto lee aspects(SE-W), which will further stress an already weak snowpack. Â Tonight and tomorrow we may see our first natural avalanche cycle of the season.
