Weather

Cold temperatures and a shallow snow pack has promoted loose sugary snow, and a persistent weak layer may have taken root over New Years. Top heavy snow last week caused a few medium sized slab avalanches. A foot of dry snow has accumulated in the last 24 hours. Winds have loaded westerly to southerly aspects at tree line and above.

Expect more snow through the week. Models suggest 2 to 3 inches of water, which should translate into over 2 feet of new snow in the upper mountains, and twice as much on wind loaded western aspects. Precipitation and temperatures look to peak Tuesday night into Thursday. The avalanche hazard will probably increase then.
