Winter is Coming!  After a warm and wet fall temperatures are beginning to fall below freezing at sea level.  An early season snowpack continues to deepen at the upper elevations and the snow line continues its crawl towards sea level.  This is a great time to run through our gear and skills and make sure that everything is functioning properly before we head out into the mountains.  

Changing our batteries in our beacons is a good first step. We should also pull out our gear to make sure we don’t have any repairs that may have been forgotten in the spring as we ditched our winter gear for summer.  Freshening up on our avalanche awareness skills is always a good idea as well.  This can be accomplished by doing a beacon search practice with friends, or reading a book  such as Snow Sense or Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain.
